We don't live in a perfect world, and there's never going to be a perfect time to give—but there are always people out there in need of help.
When you let your friends and family know of your charitable donations, they may find themselves more motivated to undertake their own efforts to give.
We need your help to make LIFE possible for the 115,000 people waiting for a second chance at life.
Life Savers Transplant Support Group was founded in 1999 by Philip David Alcantar and his wife and caregiver, Velia Alcantar. Phil was a liver recipient who felt there was a need for a support group in the El Paso and surrounding areas. They volunteered their time to speak at health fairs and other functions in order to spread the word about the importance of Organ Donation.
We are an independent, non-profit organization with a Board of Directors and by-laws. Any transplant recipient, transplant candidate, caregiver, donor, or family member who has been a member for more than one year, is eligible to be a Board Member. One of the more unique aspects of our group is that we also have family members of deceased donors in our group. Their presence in our group brings a dimension not ordinarily found in other support groups around the country and reminds us of the magnitude of the gift that we need, or have been granted.
Life Savers meets once a month on Saturdays. Call 915.225.1723 for time and location.
Our meetings provide opportunities to meet other people like us to share experiences and resources.
We learn about health care, social services and the impact of waiting for a transplant on the patient and on family and friends. We learn about the operation and what to expect.
We learn about recovery, about our new lease on life. We share our stories to help others who are waiting. We share our stories to inspire people to donate.
We celebrate each transplant and the life it extends it. We commemorate the strength and compassion of donors and their families. Their gift is precious life and we honor them for it.
Sometimes, a transplant is not available in time. There are times when transplants fail and we are there for each other no matter what.
We educate people about the need for organ donation. Each year 2,000,000 people die in this country with no organ transplant available.
Of those about 18,000 are potential donors. 7,000 are successful donors. 6,000 are not medically eligible, and 5,000 potential donors are never reached.
Our goal is to inform people of the need to donate organs. We help people learn how to become donors and to make sure their wishes are known and their families support their donation.
